Small and medium businesses are similarly demanding.  Whether a small tech startup, a “mom and pop” merchant, or a factory employing hundreds of people, these kinds of businesses move quickly and know that the using the right technology is key to success. • A Market for Unbiased Private Data: Paying Individuals According to their Privacy Attitudes

    25 Apr 2012 | 6:45 pm
Since there is, in principle, no reason why third parties should not pay individuals for the use of their data, we introduce a realistic market that would allow these payments to be made while taking into account the privacy attitude of the participants. And since it is usually important to use unbiased samples to obtain credible statistical results, we examine the properties that such a market should have and suggest a mechanism that compensates those individuals that participate according to their risk attitudes. Equally important, we show that this mechanism also benefits buyers, as they…
  • From User Comments to Online Conversations

    27 Feb 2012 | 5:23 pm
We present an analysis of user conversations in on-line social media and their evolution over time. We propose a dynamic model that accurately predicts the growth dynamics and structural properties of conversation threads. The model successfully reconciles the differing observations that have been reported in existing studies. By separating artificial factors from user behaviors, we show that there are actually underlying rules in common for on-line conversations in different social media websites. Results of our model are supported by empirical measurements throughout a number of different…
  • Long Trend Dynamics in Social Media

    20 Dec 2011 | 4:37 pm
A main characteristic of social media is that its diverse content, copiously generated by both standard outlets and general users, constantly competes for the scarce attention of large audiences. Out of this flood of information some topics manage to get enough attention to become the most popular ones and thus to be prominently displayed as trends. Equally important, some of these trends persist long enough so as to shape part of the social agenda. How this happens is the focus of this paper. By introducing a stochastic dynamical model that takes into account the user's repeated involvement…
  • The Pulse of News in Social Media: Forecasting Popularity

    20 Dec 2011 | 4:37 pm
News articles are extremely time sensitive by nature. There is also intense competition among news items to propagate as widely as possible. Hence, the task of predicting the popularity of news items on the social web is both interesting and challenging. Prior research has dealt with predicting eventual online popularity based on early popularity. It is most desirable, however, to predict the popularity of items prior to their release, fostering the possibility of appropriate decision making to modify an article and the manner of its publication. In this paper, we construct a…
  • Collective Attention and the Dynamics of Group Deals

    26 Oct 2011 | 12:39 pm
We present a study of the group purchasing behavior of daily deals in Groupon and LivingSocial and introduce a predictive dynamic model of collective attention for group buying behavior. In our model, the aggregate number of purchases at a given time comprises two types of processes: random discovery and social propagation. We find that these processes are very clearly separated by an inflection point. Using large data sets from both Groupon and LivingSocial we show how the model is able to predict the success of group deals as a function of time. We find that Groupon deals are easier to…

    9 May 2012 | 1:23 am
Lots to play with HP has gone product mad this morning - as you may have already seen from our hands-on of the refreshed Envy laptops and brand new Spectre XT Ultrabook. On top of all this new Ultrabook fodder were plenty of other products to bulk out its range of laptops, as well as some new printing hardware. First up is the HP Pavillion M6, a mid-range laptop packing latest gen Intel processors or AMD chips. A 15.6-inch Brightview HD display coupled with dual-speaker Beats Audio tech ensures the hardware package doesn't disappoint. A brushed-aluminium shell, discrete class graphics and HP…

Sitting behind these are a newly updated range of Envy Ultrabooks and the alternatively named Envy Sleekbook with AMD chip inside. Arriving in 14-inch and 15.6-inch versions, both laptops carry latest gen Intel processors or AMD APUs, which we presume will be Ivy Bridge and Trinity although we can't be sure of clock speeds yet. By far the sweetest piece of kit there has to be the new Spectre XT which sits at the top of HP's Ultrabook lineup.? The laptop shell is built out of a combination of rather tasty materials, including a MacBook Air-esque brushed-aluminium casing. At 14.5mm thin and 1.39Kg in weight, it is well within the realm of the Ultrabook and it definitely feels like one. This is a particularly premium piece of hardware and HP has done a great job designing something that looks good and weighs…

The Ultrabook that isn't an Ultrabook What's in a name? In the case of the HP Envy 14 Spectre, a lot of really confusing nonsense. Of course, it's better than the model numbers you get with TVs, but even so it's very hard to work out what Spectre really has to do with anything - although we do understand why HP called it the Envy, because it will create some of that. Technically, the Envy 14 is an Ultrabook, although we argue slightly on that point, becuase it's both thick and heavy. If it falls within the Intel spec for Ultrabooks, that's fine, but we still think if you buy it looking for a…

They were:1)      Interoperability is making a comeback – it definitely is the case that as organizations move to a hybrid cloud infrastructure that interoperability issues develop. This is one of the reasons HP is focused on Converged Cloud.2)      Security needs to be throughout the network, and that's no longer empty talk – I’ve been saying for a long time that security needs to permeate an organization’s architecture. Gamification in business is an area that I’ve been interested in lately. In particular, looking at its use to both measure and change behavior, in many dimensions.Gabe Zichermann gave an interesting talk at the 2012 The Next Web Conference in Amsterdam on gamification that is worth the time to watch, since it provides a good foundation for gamification (warning – he does use some strong language):Gabe Zichermann coordinates the gamification.co site (one of the go-to sites for the topic). The further I get into the topic, the more ways I see it can be applied (but gamification is not a…

Knowing which analyses to conduct and how to interpret their results is more valuable than ever.Negotiation and group dynamics. It turns out that organizations need dedicated managers working with teams, advancing their…

Clearly it is not and it has been around since the first parallel processing efforts took place. There are numerous examples of this misattribution today in technology, whether it is:Cloud causes greater integration issues than before – which is really the…

Like many of you, I get a bit more reading material than I can possibly ever read. Having said that, I did want to bring attention to a new magazine (described as a catalog of ideas) that just arrived out of nowhere simply titled Build. They also have a website titled thebuildnetwork.com. It comes from the creators of Inc.I am not sure how long they have been around, but I got quite a few interesting thoughts from the issue I received. They describe themselves as:“The Build Network is the new source of insight and connection dedicated to CEOs and executive teams of midsized businesses—the…

By Elaine Thurlow “kra_zquilter” (Lee, ME USA) This review is from: HP TouchPad Wi-Fi 32 GB 9.7-Inch Tablet Computer (Personal Computers) Right out of the box, we were up and running. I purchased this for my not-so-tech-savvy husband and he hit the ground running! It’s very easy to use and I am so happy he can manage his own emails and can surf freely without any problems. Even the less-than-2-year-old granddaughter knows how to navigate through the pictures, resizing and advancing them like a pro. A GREAT find.
